Why Should a Tester Care About Data? Planning Test Data Into Your Testing Approach (Extended Session)

Data has become the heartbeat of most everything we do today. Whether it’s social media, financial data, medical records, or sales transactions, data is essential to the existence of information systems.

Is the data you are creating for testing stored in a repository long before your testing has started? Or do you find yourself in the situation that many organizations face – preparing the data over and over in an adhoc process.

We no longer have the luxury of building data adhoc. There are too many risks involved with incorrect data, which can cause testing to fail and require more testing to confirm the product is ready. And with large teams, it is becoming more and more essential that data is consistent across integrated platforms.

This workshop is for the tester that understands the common concepts of data, big data, enterprise data warehouse, and ETL (extract, transport, load) and BI (business intelligence).

We will expand your strategy and vision for testing by discussing the approach that various domains in the industry use for data preparation and testing. We will have hands on exercises which will better prepare you for the test data needs for your team – using a tool too.

Session Takeaways:

  • Summary of the Concepts of Big Data / EDW / ETL / BL.
  • Review of common test data issues.
  • Review of test data needs by domains.
  • Data testing techniques.
  • Group exercises which will build a stronger skill set in test data – using a tool.
  • A deep understanding of the importance of accurate and reliable, repeatable test data.
